Persian Numbers ۰–۹: How to Read Numerals and Dates

Persian numbers often become readable faster than Persian words. The symbols are different from the 0–9 forms used in English, but the underlying decimal system is the same: each digit has the same value, and place value still determines whether a symbol means five, fifty, or five hundred.

The ten Persian digits are ۰ ۱ ۲ ۳ ۴ ۵ ۶ ۷ ۸ ۹. Learning them makes calendars, prices, addresses, phone numbers, receipts, sports scores, and family dates much easier to recognize. It also clears up a common point of confusion: Persian digits are related to the numeral forms used in Arabic, but they are not visually identical.

The digit and the spoken word are two different things. The symbol ۷ has the value seven; the Persian word for that value is haft. You can recognize a written price without yet knowing how to say the full number aloud.

Are Persian numerals the same as Arabic numerals?

They belong to the same broad writing tradition, but the modern character sets differ. Compare them:

  • Persian: ۰۱۲۳۴۵۶۷۸۹
  • Arabic-Indic: ٠١٢٣٤٥٦٧٨٩
  • Latin digits used in English: 0123456789

The Unicode Consortium’s digit terminology calls the Persian set “Eastern Arabic-Indic digits” and assigns it the range U+06F0 through U+06F9. The Arabic-Indic set commonly used with Arabic occupies a separate range, U+0660 through U+0669.

The easiest differences to spot are usually 4, 5, and 6:

  • Persian ۴ ۵ ۶
  • Arabic-Indic ٤ ٥ ٦

Fonts and regional handwriting can change the exact shapes. The Unicode Standard’s chapter on Arabic-script writing specifically notes glyph variation among the Eastern Arabic-Indic forms, especially around four, five, six, and seven. For practical reading, identify the complete Persian set rather than assuming every Arabic-script number will use the same shapes.

If Persian is right to left, which way do numbers run?

Persian sentences run from right to left, but the digits inside an ordinary multi-digit number keep their numerical order. The number ۱۴۰۵ means 1405: one-thousand place, hundreds place, tens place, then ones place. You do not reverse it to 5041.

This mixture is why Persian text is technically bidirectional. The current Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm explains that Arabic-script text flows right to left while digits within it are written left to right. Browsers and phones normally handle this automatically, although punctuation, slashes, parentheses, and copied text can jump into surprising positions when an app handles direction poorly.

For learners, the safest habit is simple: treat the entire number as one unit. Read its digits in the displayed numerical sequence, then return to the surrounding Persian sentence.

How place value works in Persian numbers

The numeral system is positional and decimal, just like the one used in English:

  • ۲۵ = 25
  • ۴۰۷ = 407
  • ۱٬۲۰۰ = 1,200
  • ۱۴۰۵ = 1,405

Written out in Persian words, 1405 is هزار و چهارصد و پنج (hezâr-o chahârsad-o panj). The linking sound -o, written with و, connects the parts much as “and” does in “one thousand four hundred and five.”

Persian number formatting also has its own familiar punctuation. The Unicode Common Locale Data Repository chart for Persian numbers shows forms such as ۱۲۳٬۴۵۶٫۷. The raised comma-like mark ٬ separates thousands, while ٫ is the decimal separator. In informal diaspora writing, ordinary commas and periods are also common, especially when a Persian sentence includes prices or data copied from an English-language system.

How to read a Persian calendar date

Numeric Persian dates commonly use a year/month/day pattern. For example:

۱۴۰۵/۰۵/۲۶

This can be separated as:

  • ۱۴۰۵ — year 1405
  • ۰۵ — fifth month
  • ۲۶ — twenty-sixth day

In the Solar Hijri calendar, month 5 is Mordad, so the date reads 26 Mordad 1405. The compact year/month/day pattern is also reflected in the Unicode CLDR’s Persian calendar-format data.

Two checks prevent most mistakes. First, identify whether the year looks Solar Hijri—such as 1405—or Gregorian—such as 2026. Second, do not assume the North American month/day/year order. When four digits appear first, you are probably looking at year/month/day.

Persian digits in prices, phone numbers, and addresses

Context tells you how to interpret a string of digits:

  • Prices: Look for a currency word such as تومان (toman) or ریال (rial). The numeral itself uses ordinary place value.
  • Phone numbers: Read the digits individually rather than as one large number. A zero at the beginning remains meaningful.
  • Addresses: Building, apartment, postal-code, and street numbers may appear in Persian or Latin digits depending on the form or platform.
  • Years: A number around ۱۴۰۵ probably refers to a Solar Hijri year; a number around ۲۰۲۶ probably refers to a Gregorian year.
  • Time: Digital times may use Persian digits with a colon, as in ۱۴:۳۰.

Iranian diaspora households often mix systems in the same message: Persian script, Latin digits, a Solar Hijri date, and a Gregorian appointment can all appear together. That mixture is normal. Reading confidently depends less on enforcing one format than on recognizing which system each piece belongs to.

Common mistakes beginners make

Confusing ۵ with zero

Persian ۵ means five. Persian zero is ۰. In small fonts the two can look related, so learn them as a pair.

Reversing the entire number

Right-to-left sentence direction does not mean reversing ۱۴۰۵. Read it as 1405.

Mixing Persian and Arabic digit shapes

Many readers will understand a mixed string, but software may store the characters differently. If you are entering a formal date, search term, filename, or database value, use one consistent digit set.

Assuming every slash date follows American order

۱۴۰۵/۰۵/۲۶ is year/month/day, not month/day/year. Use the size of the first number and the surrounding language as clues.

A five-minute way to memorize the digits

  1. Start with the easy anchors: ۰, ۱, ۲, ۳, ۷, ۸, ۹.
  2. Drill the easily confused group: ۴, ۵, ۶.
  3. Write your birth year, a familiar phone number, and today’s time in Persian digits.
  4. Practice on real calendar pages, prices, or sports scores rather than isolated flash cards.
  5. Read each number once as individual digits and once as a complete value.

Why Persian numerals matter in the diaspora

Recognizing ۰–۹ is a small skill with an outsized effect. A heritage learner who cannot yet read a paragraph may still identify a grandparent’s birthday, understand the date on a memorial notice, follow a volleyball score, or navigate a Persian event poster. Numbers create an early bridge between passive familiarity and useful literacy.

They also preserve visual context. Writing “1405” communicates the value; writing “۱۴۰۵” immediately places that value inside Persian-language life. Neither form is more mathematically correct. The Persian form simply carries the script, typography, and cultural setting with it.
